Still thinking of a deep deep quote. Basically:

It is super important for non-profits, advocacy and related groups to take charge of their destiny. Having control of your data is a good start. The crowd-sourced nature of an open source project in so in line with the co-operation and principles of most non-profits

CiviCRM is a project that strives to make the above possible. It is FREE as in kittens.

Civi is one of those pieces of software that makes you wonder how early humans could have survived without it. Every nonprofit seems to be using Civi for some aspect of their fundraising, and I'm always surprised at the creative ways different people find to make it work for their needs. Happy to be able to help out a bit. There's a lot of energy going into this project--definitely checkout the forums and the IRC channel if you're curious.

As non-profit consultants working for non-profit organizations, we found CiviCRM to be particularly well suited to answer the common needs of activist associations, charities and other medium-sized groups. Based in Montréal, we've helped local and international organizations migrate to CiviCRM to manage their memberships, events, communications and fundraising campaigns. We empower our clients and assist them when they need us.

AustLII is the leader in the free access to law movement and has a philospophical bias towards open source systems. After investigating all the other possible major alternatives it seemed logical to turn to CiviCRM. We have software developer resources, and though it is not core business, we may be able to direct some of these resources towards improving CiviCRM for the community.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation's mission is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and translational research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increasing public awareness about good breast health.

The Promise:

The initial promise of deploying CiviCRM for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation was to grow their online fundraising efforts by diversifying their approach.

The Challenge:

The biggest challenge facing this project was simply communicating the value of using a community-directed open source software solution rather than the proprietary solution that had been in use.

The CiviCRM Solution:

We evaluated every major CRM on the market in making the decision to use CiviCRM when conducting due diligence in 2008. We evaluated Blackbaud, Kintera, Convio (which, at the time were individual, proprietary solutions) and others. CiviCRM stood out because it was the only solution that allowed us to look-under-the-hood, test drive, and customize to BCRF's purposes.

Project Team:

This project involved every department of the BCRF. Discovery included leadership from development, marketing, communications and events. rayogram provided a dedicated project manager, a database expert, a back-end developer and a front-end coder.

More on the Success of this Organization:
http://www.bcrfcure.org
The Team:
http://www.rayogram.com
Key Functionality:

BCRF needed to be able to solicit:

  • direct donations
  • direct donations on behalf of corporate sponsors
  • recurring gifts
  • tribute gifts

It was key that campaigns such as "Raise a Day of Research" and the "Evelyn Lauder Founder's Fund" could be embedded into Facebook so that donors could give directly to BCRF. Also that we could create highly customized, personalized receipts thanking donors for their gift based on the contribution source or type. BCRF also needed to build its subscriber list and send targeted mass mailings to:

  • bi-annual Pink Press subscribers
  • monthly BCRF EPress subscribers
  • social media marketing activists
  • corporate partners
  • grantees
  • journalists
  • bloggers

Events registration was also required - for both BCRF and constituent-run "Independent" events as well as peer-to-peer fundraising. Extensive custom exports and reporting were required to allow BCRF to:

  • evaluate fundraising campaigns
  • pull targeted mailing lists
  • import data into their offline donor management solution

Modifications and Modules:

We deployed:

  • Contacts
  • Contributions
  • Mail
  • Events
  • Personal Campaign Pages
  • Reports
  • peer-to-peer fundraising

The only customization was in the interface of the donation forms and creation of custom data (not in the modules themselves).

Server & Hosting Requirements:

The server & hosting requirements included:

  • a secure certificate (SSL)
  • a dedicated SMTP server for outgoing mail
  • PHP 5.2.1+ (PHP 5.3 is supported starting with CiviCRM 3.2)
  • MySQL 5.1.x+ with InnoDB support
  • Drupal 7.x
  • Server cronjobs
  • 128mb+ PHP memory limit
  • 1 GB RAM dedicated to CiviCRM processes

Benefits To The CiviCRM Community:

This biggest contribution of this project to the CiviCRM community was our development of the Simply Civi theme.
