In New York City we have been fortunate to have had in person user group meetings. It has been useful to CiviCRM see case studies presented by companies and individuals. To learn about how people use and customize CiviCRM for different types of organizations. It is also useful to meet in person other implementers, developers and users to work with on professional and volunteer projects. I think it is also important and fulfilling to try to share knowledge and resources with others to help sustain the community and project.

ISBA is an international non-profit society with members from all over the world. We have sections that represent different scientific areas and chapters that represent different regions of the world. Civi Member powers our membership system! We use CiviEvent for Conference and Workship registration, and utilize CiviPetition for creating new sections to our society through member petitions. We are epxloring how CiviGrants can be used to track our travel awards and look forward to features for integrating accounting and finance. As a growing non-profit CiviCRM plays a major role in managing our membership system!

We feel there are too many obstacles facing not-for-profits (NFPs) considering commercial CRM offerings, including many of those that are charity oriented. From licensing models which restrict the fluid expansion of an organisation's user base (why should you be punished with higher costs for being successful?), to support from commercial companies being inherently tied to one supplier; a NFP would benefit from the option to 'shop around' for those most appropriate, e.g. based on: proximity and availability on-site, cost, experience, value added services... They also often lack the capacity for charity relevant workflows, necessitating either customisations, complicated and inefficient workarounds or an en-masse call for new functionality, as individual charities do not appear to carry the weight required to influence subtle NFP-only changes to market leading software, without large expense.

On the flip side, CiviCRM is completely free and open-source, carrying with it a friendly, hard-working and enthusiastic community of developers and implementers, constantly listening to the users' needs and sculpting future releases to the requirements of NFP organisations. This is exciting!

I'm quite impressed with the responsiveness of the CiviCRM community, both from the core developers and many experienced users who have quickly provided answers and ideas in areas where I just needed that extra insight, or where we needed to do something totally new. Non-profit organization CHTOP handled an online nation-wide database of respite service providers since 2001. Their system (web interface and database) was proprietary and over years they naturally lost support for the aged Microsoft OS and Access database, not to mention that the original coder changed his profession. CiviCRM proved to be perfectly versatile and had success at importing:

  1. registrations of thousands of organizations
  2. dozens of custom fields of various properties - text, yes/no, number ranges
  3. multiple registration interfaces for Searchers and Program Providers (registrants)
  4. custom search interface with dozens of custom selections

Allora conducted CiviCRM setup, orchestrated the migration process and helped the customer expand the functionality by adding extra features such as document library, displaying additional info for each state, proximity based location search, etc. The live site can be found here: respitelocator.org

The Promise:

It was important not to lose any data of course: no scaling-down. The customer requested additional features, for example: on the search results for any specific state the Contacts must be accompanied with a state-specific page bringing additional information of state regulations. The combination of CiviCRM Profiles + Smart Groups + minor code customization allowed us to achive this goal among many others.

The Challenge:

The looks. In order to achieve the desired appearance of the sign-up form we had to rely on CiviCRM's Front-End Profile code from an older CiviCRM version (pre-AJAX) and fully matched the requested look. Nevertheless we had to compromise in the section of displaying Search results on the Front-End because not everything was tweakable via CSS.

The CiviCRM Solution:

Community Builder was another contender but our firm had substantial experience with integrating CiviCRM-based solutions and feature-wise we felt like CiviCRM is a better tool for our goals.

Key Functionality:

1) Custom fields , custom profiles for a very specific Search Engine design. Each Respite Program is characterized by ~60 custom parameters not including the standard info

Modifications and Modules:

Core CiviCRM along with a small modification: we had to utilize Pre-Form Help field as a way to inject a corresponding Joomla article, by default this is only show for data entry and NOT search results. Luckily, with the help of the CiviCRM team and Brian Shaugnessy we found a way to insert just one line in order to make it visible.
