The CiviCRM community has been a tremendous resource for new ideas and helping us solve problems. We are excited to contribute customizations EFF makes back to core and support new features such as batch entry for offline donations or multiple payment processors on one donation form.

We work with non-profits to help them use and understand Civi. It's such an important tool for these organisations and it's great to see people using it in different and interesting ways. Using and working with Civi is made so much more fun and useful by the enthusiastic and talented community surrounding it.

CiviCRM provides a vital tool whereby nonprofits and other social projects can implement strong contact-relationship management capabilities without high monthly fees. It also provides the integration and customization capabilities necessary to make such software useful in the complex, lived reality of doing social engagement work. Plus it continues to build the open source toolset made available to the Commons and grow the common good.

Civi has been an amazing tool for CMJ (and for other organizations I work with) to keep our most important data all in one place in a user friendly way.

The CiviCRM community is a very friendly and helpful community. Whatever the challenge, I always get enough help from the forum or IRC to nudge me in the right direction. For me joining in a CiviCRM sprint once or twice a year is the best, meeting other community members in real life, sharing successes, challenges, problems and meals :-) Seriously, I think the active community is one of the serious assets of CiviCRM and I am proud to be part of it! And when I grow up I promise to do more :-)

We help many not for profits implement CiviCRM through consultancy, training, configuration and custom development. Many of them come from a painful world of old Access databases, multiple spreadsheets and even paper. It's really satisfying to
help people move on with a system that's so much in tune with their own ethics of sharing and collaboration. We also 'eat our own dog food' and use Civi in-house for our client records because we love the flexibility and control it gives us.

For us it's important to share code and advice with other members of the community when we can because we know we get it back in help at other times. The community really is awesome and one of the friendliest and undaunting I've come across. We appreciate the huge value of the software to us and our clients so we try to contribute back and make it even better.

CiviCRM allows us to bring all benefits and capabilities of a large commercial CRM and
donor management system to medium and large non-profits at a fraction of the cost. CiviCRM also allows smaller non-profits to benefit from an integrated solution for donor management, events, bulk email, etc. substantially increasing their effectiveness as compared to managing a variety of nonintegrated software and spreadsheets. Thanks to a strong CiviCRM community, CiviCRM’s functionality continues to advance and CiviCRM’s market continues to grow rapidly.

City Bible Forum is an Australian not-for-profit Christian organisation. We need to communicate effectively with our constituents, and CiviCRM gives us a comprehensive set of tools for managing relationships. Interestingly, we often find that new features are being added just as our need for those features is becoming apparent. It's the right fit for us.

Enhanced Meetup Format Proposed

We held an intimate and productive NYC Meet Up March 24th with intrepid CiviCRM community members bearing the rain, snow and sleet of spring.

We aim to hold NYC Meetups on the third Thursday of each month which puts the next meet up on Thursday, April 21 from 6-8 p.m.

We will send out invitations two weeks prior to the event with the topic and case study, and a reminder two days prior.

We discussed an ambitious new format for future meet ups that would include:

a. 15 minutes of introductions

b. a 30 minute case study related to the evenings topic

c. 1 hour  in-depth conversation on the topic including a discussion of  'creative solutions to common issues'

d. a 15 minutes of  general Q&A off topic

We would like everyone's feedback on the following 'topics' for future discussion to see which are of most interest. We'd also like recommendations for case studies related to each topic so we can invite a developer and/or a client to present a 30 minute case study (even if  they are not local to NYC and would present via SKYPE).

Potential topics include:

  1. COMMUNITY how to participate in the CiviCRM community
  2. CONTACTS
  3. CASES
  4. GIFTS (donations, pledges, recurring gifts etc.)
  5. CONTACTS
  6. GROUPS/SMART GROUPS/TAGS
  7. MEMBERSHIP
  8. EVENTS
  9. MAIL
  10. ADVOCACY
  11. REPORTING
  12. DATA IMPORT
  13. API

Groups audience:

-REPORTING

-GROUPS/SMART GROUPS/TAGS

The FLOSS manual has a good conceptual overview, and the wiki has a decent tags vs. groups page, but more examples couldn't hurt. og_sync, group_roles & member_roles make for even more options, and I feel that they're likely candidates for expedient misuse.

MEMBERSHIP Case study

Permalink Submitted by jane ryan beck on March 28, 2011 - 06:48

If anyone is interested in Membership  -  I have a good case study with strategies for developing different membership groups (and levels) as well as allowing  volunteers to  administrate groups (managing contacts, events and e-mails to their specific group). This would also include a discussion of how to use Drupal Organic Groups for access control.

Reporting and Membership/OG

Both the Reporting and Membership/OG sound particularly interesting.   Thanks Jane for the case study offer - who else can offer a case study on one of these topics?
