Okay, so 1.8 stable has been released - and the roadmap indicates that it includes CiviReport Phase 1. You may be wondering... How does it work? What does it do? How can I try it out? etc.... First, CiviReport isn't really a new component in CiviCRM. Rather, it's a set of sample reports which we've built on an open-sourced reporting engine called BIRT (Business Information Reporting Tool). The reports use SQL queries to interact with your CiviCRM database. There is (as of yet) no application or code-level integration between BIRT and CiviCRM. The report files are BIRT-formatted XML files which are developed using BIRT's Report Designer and "run" using BIRT's runtime engine. I've been spending free cycles the past month exploring BIRT. I don't expect to become an expert in this tool anytime soon - but my goal has been to learn enough to be a bit dangerous. More importantly, in collaboration... Read more

We are excited to announce that our 1.8 release is now available for download, as well as testing on our demo site. We would like to thank our dedicated users for installing and testing the beta releases.

This release features finding and merging duplicate contacts (de-duping, based on David Strauss’s algorithm), event price sets, employer fields in profiles, improved admin control panel, RSS feeds for events, the ability to define multiple payment processors, an automated Drupal installer and more; the CiviCRM 1.8 Roadmap describes all of the new features, while the resolved issues list sports the implementation details and lists fixed bugs.

Many of the additions and changes...

This has been posted by my fellow team mate on the forum, but I since we want as many translations as possible, let's make others know, here's a repost to our blog. :-)

I’m happy to announce that the CiviCRM 1.8 POT and PO files are generated and that the CiviCRM 1.8 area is open at our translations server.

For people preferring the raw POT/PO files, these can be easily obtained from our repository.

Thanks a lot for your hard work and do feel free to bug us with any string issues in the new files!

We are making pretty good progress towards a 1.8 beta release. A late breaking forum post revealed some bugs with the sql upgrade script. Once we are done with testing that issue, we should be pretty close to announcing a beta candidate for 1.8.

Overall things are looking pretty good with this release. We do think that having more people download and test the beta will allow us to have a quality final release. We are pleased with the quality of the 1.7 release and would like to make 1.8 even better. We've had approx 500 downloads of the alpha package, and would love to see approx double that number download and test the beta package.

In other news, the Joomla project announce Joomla 1.5 RC1. This means that 1.8 will have support for Joomla 1.5 RCx. Most features in the beta release will work quite nicely...

CiviCRM 1.8 is coming along nicely and we are more or less on track regarding release schedule. We plan for another alpha release early next week.

After publishing the first alpha release and announcing that the sandbox is up a week ago we started to receive the first stream of 1.8-specific bugs, which we started resolving right away. We hope to get the number of currently open 1.8 issues down to a single digit by the end of the week; the number of resolved 1.8 issues is over 170, with over 70 of them being improvements and new features. Also worth visiting is the CiviCRM 1.8 feature overview...

In addition to many new features in CiviCRM v1.8, we have worked on few improvements for CiviCRM Profile.

1. We have added functionality which allows people to create User Account in Drupal using CiviCRM profile. So this way, user can create customized User Registration pages without using default Drupal User Registration form.

For more details: CRM-1633

2. Another interesting feature for profile is Option to Generate Email Notifications when a profile is created or edited.

For more details: CRM-1941

The new de-dupe functionality, introduced in CiviCRM 1.8, is configurable under Administer CiviCRMDuplicate Contact Rules. This post describes the meaning of the fields and the way their contents impact the de-dupe search engine.

The first decision to make after going to Administer CiviCRMDuplicate Contact Rules is which rule to edit. For CiviCRM 1.8 we decided to allow one rule per every contact type (individual, organization and household); in future versions this can be extended to arbitrary list of rules.

After making the choice of which rule to edit, the next screen displays the selected rule’s properties. Every de-dupe rule consists of several criteria that any two contacts (of a given type) must meet to be considered ‘similar’ (this is an approach introduced in David Strauss’s CiviCluster module).

Every criterion, in turn, consists of three parameters – a contact field...
