Greater London Volunteering (GLV) promotes the importance of volunteering and aims to increase the quality of experience for volunteers in Greater London. It supports member organisations who work with volunteers across the capital.

Many of GLV's members run training courses and events for volunteers. To assist its members GLV wanted to create a central resource to host events and training. The Experts in Volunteering website aims to offer the very best in workshops, seminars and resources for London’s volunteering community.

The website was developed by Community IT Academy using CiviCRM and Drupal.

Events are a key part of this website. It was important that attendees could find the events and courses that were of interest to them quickly and easily. They should then be able to book a place on their chosen event effortlessly.


The aims of the new system are to:

  • promote the training programmes and events of GLV and its members

  • allow GLV to centrally manage, develop and maintain bookings and attendee details

  • allow the generation and management of mailing lists and mass emailing functionality

  • enable GLV to share resources with members, stakeholders and other users

  • create a system that is flexible and expandable for future needs


The main challenge was translating an idea in our heads into a product without our own detailed technical skills in house. We are a small charity with a big ambition. Thankfully Community IT Academy were able to provide the technical support to turn the idea into reality.

Why did this project use CiviCRM?

CiviCRM was selected because it meets most of the requirements out of the box without the need for extensive development. This meant that we were able to keep the costs down but also to allow for future expansion. Being open source it is possible to extend the CiviCRM system in future as the organisation's needs change and develop.
