UPDATE: Please use the v2.2 beta downloads. The below version is now obsolete In conjunction with some awesome folks in the Joomla core team and Elin Waring (mcsmom), we've restructured the CiviCRM install process for J! 1.5.9 in the hope of increasing the install success rate on shared hosting. There are changes to the front end (contributed by Elin) to simplify menu creation. Note that this is alpha code, so please use and deploy on a test site only. You need to be running a recent version of Joomla 1.5 (we recommend Joomla 1.5.9). You can either choose either option: install from directory or install from url. Ideally we'd like to see if the install succeeded via both methods. Please do not choose Upload Package File option. If you are using this option, please ensure that the "tmp" directory under Joomla root has write access for the webserver (chmod a+rwx tmp). If you need help or assistance contact us on IRC here or twitter (send a message to civicrm)

sorry to say - no problem with 2.1... 2.2 failed 4 times using "install" option from my backend... so I quit.
Any idea what might be wrong?

I installed CiviCRM 2.2 beta onto a fresh Joomla version 1.5.9 environment. I did the install from directory and that worked fine. I created one event in CiviEvent, then created 2 menu items to point to the event. First I created a menu item of type "CiviCRM/CiviEvents/Register for Events" and that is working fine. Then I created a menu item of type "CiviCRM/CiviEvents/Event Info". But when I test the Event Info menu item from the Joomla front end, I get the error message: You do not have permission to execute this url.

The event is working fine in the back-end.

Thanks,
Sarah
