As developers for various OpenSource CRM applications, we learned a lot from CiviCRM on its scalability and ease of customization.
CiviCRM community is truly organic cultivating growth for users and developers.
We wish to continue learning with CiviCRM and to tackle future challenges with CiviCRM.

I find the engagement with our community of users to be intellectually stimulating
and rewarding. Seeing folks with expertise in a particular area step up and contribute their time and ideas to help improve the product is quite exciting. Every time I hear about a new interesting organization starting to use CiviCRM, I get a renewed sense of excitement about our work. The range of civic sector organizations currently using the software is quite amazing to me - from large international advocacy organizations to local performing arts troupes. I also really enjoy interacting with our international community - building friendships and getting to share culture (food, music, humor ....) with colleagues on every continent.

Civi has been an amazing tool for CMJ (and for other organizations I work with) to keep our most important data all in one place in a user friendly way.

Working with CiviCRM enriches our commonwealth. Any investment in CiviCRM is
shared by the community as a whole. Community organizations naturally complement the spirit of Free/Libre Software.

Progressive Technology Project

CiviCRM is helping us serve member-based community organizing groups across the
U.S. to keep better track of their events, fundraising, and membership data. It's helping our community to aim higher in terms of what kind of questions they should be asking and what kind of data they should be collecting. We chose CiviCRM because it's the best all-around tool to do what our groups need, AND because it's open source.

The organizations we work with are experiencing the benefits of a robust tool that is
easy to use, supports their work, and allows them to collect and track data from various parts of their organization, such as membership, fundraising, communications, and organizing into a centralized database. CiviCRM as an open-source solution also allows us to nurture and build a user community to share and create a common vision of future features that would be useful to the community organizing field. Just two years after our pilot project, we're currently supporting 30 community organizing groups to use CiviCRM, and the community is steadily growing.

I've always been passionate about what non-profits and advocacy groups can achieve using technology. For me, CiviCRM shows an essential example of how non-profit and technology worlds can come together to provide real change - working as community, creating value for yourself, but also for others in non-profit sector.

CiviCRM has one of the most active and friendliest communities I have come across. From initial tentative forum posts I was encouraged into engaging more actively through IRC and directly with other groups & individuals and am now happy to count many community members as friends. I recently found an article on the web that said if you post a question about CiviCRM anywhere on the web Lobo will post an answer within a few hours. It often feels like that is true.

One of the most valuable way in which the community supports me is by allowing me to bounce my ideas around and often someone is able to suggest an approach which is better than mine.

I have been involved in the CiviCRM community for over 4 years, and enjoy implementing and programming CiviCRM for a variety of non-profits. I have been amazed at the rapid pace of innovation delivered with each new release, and CiviCRM's flexibility in being able to accommodate a variety of requirements. I have learned a lot about CiviCRM by participating in CiviCon, online forums, and CiviCRM book sprint.

CiviCRM is a powerful tool that could be really useful for many non-profits in Mexico.
Unfortunately the community is very small in my country. I hope that in the next years the community expands around Latin America.

CiviCRM 3.4.3 and 4.0.3 are released!!!

Submitted by yashodha on June 14, 2011 - 04:46

CiviCRM 3.4.3 and 4.0.3 has just been released and both are available for download. You can also try them out on the public demos: Drupal 6 / Drupal 7 and Joomla 1.5 / Joomla 1.6 sites. The newest CiviCRM versions are:

  • 4.0.3 for Drupal 7 and Joomla 1.6
  • 3.4.3 for Drupal 6 and Joomla 1.5

We strongly recommend reviewing the 3.4/4.0 highlights post, where you will find out what’s new and hot in 3.4/4.0 release.

What’s new?

There have been ~70 bug fixes and improvements and some critical date related fixes since last release. A detailed list is here. We strongly recommend that you upgrade your CiviCRM installation to 3.4.3 or 4.0.3. Quick list of the most prominent new features and improvements in this release:

  • Ability to schedule reminders CRM-8149
  • Allow 'on behalf of' form to use a profile CRM-6134
  • Comprehensive change logging reports for Contact data and Contributions
  • Ability to REVERT changes to contact data
  • Improvements to extensions mechanism (ability to download extensions automatically)
  • A new improved api

…and other features, sponsored through successful Make it Happen campaigns:

  • Permissioning for Joomla! 1.6 (requires CiviCRM 4.0)
  • Workflow (rules integration) for CiviMail (Drupal installs)
  • Campaign Integration with other CiviCRM components
  • Multi-Site and hierarchical groups support for CiviMail
  • Add Prev/Next links to dedupe merge screen
  • Membership ‘upsell’ – allowing membership type to be changed on renewal while maintaining continuity
  • Credit offline and existing contributions to a personal campaign page

More details on the new features are in the What’s new in CiviCRM 3.4 / 4.0? post.

New and improved CiviCRM API

CiviCRM 3.4 and 4.0 bring you a new and improved API 3, designed from scratch by non-core CiviCRM developers (i.e., people who actually use the API calls on a daily basis). Your existing code utilising API 2 calls should still work, but you’re more than encouraged to test and upgrade it to the new API 3 calls – API 3 is the one that will be developed in the future, while API 2 will only receive critical fixes.

Important information for multilingual sites

As per this blog post from a month ago, some multilingual data was turned back into monolingual. You will be informed about this during the upgrade process, but do make sure you have a proper backup of your pre-upgrade database, as only the contents for the default language will be preserved.

Step up and help out!

The moment of releasing CiviCRM 3.4 and 4.0 is a great occasion to get involved in CiviCRM community. There are many ways you can help make CiviCRM better.

  • Log in to the one of the demos and try out your favourite features. If you find a problem, please report it on the appropriate forum board. Remember that demo data is periodically reset.
  • Download the tarball and upgrade a copy of your site to 3.4.3 or 4.0.3 – let us know if you encounter any problems. This is an especially valuable contribution since we need to have the upgrade process tested on different sets of data. After you’ve done this, play around with your favourite features, with your local data. Problems appearing? Use the appropriate forum board to discuss problems and find solutions (based on the type of question or issue you've got).
  • If you’re a developer and have PHP skills, we strongly encourage you to develop and attach a code patch AND a unit test along with any bug you report through our issue tracker. Ping us on IRC if you need help figuring out how to do this.

Downloads

You can download the release from SourceForge. The filenames include the 3.4.3 and 4.0.3 labels, e.g. civicrm-3.4.3-drupal.tar.gz or civicrm-4.0.3-joomla.zip. Make sure you’re downloading the correct version: for Drupal or Joomla. Again, remember that 4.0.x works with Joomla 1.6 and Drupal 7, while 3.4.x works with Joomla 1.5 and Drupal 6.

New Installations

If you are installing CiviCRM 3.4.3 or 4.0.3 from scratch, please use the corresponding automated installer instructions:

  • Install CiviCRM 4.0 on Drupal 7
  • Install CiviCRM 4.0 on Joomla 1.6
  • Install CiviCRM 3.4 on Drupal 6
  • Install CiviCRM 3.4 on Joomla 1.5

Upgrading to 3.4.3 or 4.0.3

The procedure for upgrading is described in following documents:

  • Upgrade Drupal Sites to 3.4
  • Upgrade Drupal Sites to 4.0
  • Upgrade Joomla Sites to 3.4
  • Upgrade Joomla Sites to 4.0
