Thanks to the awesome folks over at the Joomla! project, CiviCRM will have a few projects in Google's Summer of Code this year. You can see the list of proposed project ideas here: http://docs.joomla.org/Summer_of_Code_2008_Project_Ideas#CiviCRM_Projects The biggest thing we need now are students to apply! Here are the top 3 reasons why you (or a student you know) should work on CiviCRM this summer: 1. CiviCRM is an open source application that helps non-profits all over the world spend more time helping people, saving our environment, and improving our lives and less time managing their data. Some examples of organizations using it are: Amnesty International, U.S. PIRG, Environment America, Wikipedia, and the American Friends Service Committee. 2. CiviCRM is written in PHP, has a friendly and fun development team, and is a really cool project to put on your resume. 3. If you have plans to work with non-profits, service organizations, advocacy organizations, or any sort of social change / social welfare program after college, then there's a high likelihood you'll be using a CRM tool of some kind. Maybe even CiviCRM! Well done for Joomla!

Does this mean that the resulting code will not find its way into Drupal implementations of civicrm?

Not at all! If the code is not specifically targeting CiviCRM/Joomla! integration, but some broader CiviCRM aspect, it will be developed in a CMS-agnostic manner.
