We are looking for a talented developer to join our growing team working with a wide variety of non profit clients, including some household names.

Salary: £35,000-45,000 per annum, depending on experience

Application deadline: Wednesday 28th July 2021
Background
We help non profits make an impact through the development of tools and technical solutions. These tools and solutions are based on a solid understanding of how our clients work and what they want to achieve. We use and contribute to open source software every day in our work.

We are a growing team looking for talented developers that share our passion for our work and have demonstrable experience in our field of work.

Our primary tool is CiviCRM - an open source CRM designed primarily for non profits. We use this together with complementary tools and our own code to build solutions for our clients.

Our client engagements are long term and we build close working relationships with our client contacts. Projects typically start with a discovery phase to develop a solid understanding of the client's needs. Following on from this we deliver a mixture of implementation and configuration, training on how to use the system, and (when necessary) the development of custom software. The primary focus of your role will be to identify when we need to develop custom software and then to design, develop and test this software, and to maintain it over its lifetime. This work will be done in collaboration with other developers on the team and in the wider open source community, and will involve various aspects of software development (frontend, backend, ‘devops’, etc.) depending on your skills and experience.

As a small company, there will be times when you will be required to work outside of the primary focus of your role, for example you might be asked to contribute to internal systems that help us deliver work to clients.
Day to day activities
You'll work with a small team at Third Sector Design, communicating directly with clients and with others in the CiviCRM community. On a day to day basis, you will:

work with clients to understand when software development is the right solution
write, test, deploy and maintain custom code for clients
write, test and maintain open source software (e.g. CiviCRM extensions) for use by the wider community
work with others at Third Sector Design to document and publicise our work
train and empower clients to make the best use of the tools we have implemented and developed for them
participate in community events such as conferences, meetups, and sprints
work on internal tools and systems for Third Sector Design (which are all open source)
Skills and experience
We are looking for someone that can hit the ground running. You don’t need to have all of the following skills and experience, but the best candidates will be able to demonstrate experience in many of these areas:

Developing web applications (not just simple ‘wordpress websites’)
Working with CRM (CiviCRM experience very desirable but not required)
PHP and PHP frameworks (or other similar languages, e.g. python)
Integrating external APIs (e.g. payment services, email service providers, SMS, AI and natural language processing)
Front end/UI/UX skills (including CSS and JS frameworks)
Contributing to open source projects
Active participation in a community (can be real world or online, technical or non technical, e.g. a software community, a local club or association)
Working with non profits in a professional or voluntary capacity
System administration, operating systems and infrastructure (Linux, Docker, etc.)
WordPress, Drupal or similar content management systems

Benefits and working environment
We are a mainly remote team with an office in Exeter. Ideally, you will live a commutable distance from Exeter, though we will make exceptions for the best candidates.

Staff that live a commutable distance to Exeter aim to spend one day a week in the office working face to face with colleagues. They are free to spend the rest of their time working from home or in the office as preferred. Staff that live further away typically arrange one week-long visit to the office per quarter. The role will likely involve some international travel for conferences and client meetings.

Note: we were a remote first organisation before Covid-19. Since the beginning of the Pandemic we have been fully working from home. Our aim is to go back to one day a week when government restrictions are lifted (hopefully July 19th).
Applications
To apply, please email your CV, along with a covering letter that explains why you would like to work with us and highlights your relevant skills and experience, and links to any supporting resources (e.g. your github profile, examples of your work, etc.) to careers@thirdsectordesign.org.

Initial interviews are planned for the week of 9th August. Candidates that pass the initial interview will be asked to complete a short task which we will review at a second interview approximately one week later.

Feel free to call or email with any questions about the role before submitting your application.
