Using Form Builder to create a volunteer application form

Back in May at CiviCRM North East, we looked at an example of using Form Builder to create a volunteer application form. This is a slightly delayed (sorry!) write up of that talk.

For those that aren't aware, Form Builder, is a really helpful new feature in CiviCRM that allows you to create forms natively in CiviCRM without the need for external plugins. It is still in active development so not feature complete yet, but is definitely worth taking a look at.

In 2016 Tim Otten wrote a manifesto of sorts which outlined a practical and effective way to modernize CiviCRM. It boiled down to 5 letters: LExIM. 5 years on, CiviCRM is indeed in better shape than it was then, thanks to a tenacious community of developers following this path. So what is LExIM, why has it gotten us where we are today, and where are we headed?

Form Builder is a promising new cross-platform tool for making forms that sync with CiviCRM data. It's more powerful flexible than Profiles, and more compatible than proprietary plugins like Caldera. The only downside is that it's not finished. It is currently included with CiviCRM as a beta extension, but we can change that.

Let's make 2022 the year that Form Builder gets out of beta and into mainstream use! Here are some encouraging recent developments and exciting plans for the near future (and how you can help):

CiviCRM was built to be a CRM for organizational data with which users may leverage powerful components that provide a range of functionality and build complex workflows to manage constituent information, all under one system. There exist many ways in which data can come into CiviCRM, and there’s a far greater number of ways in which the data is used across the thousands of organizations that currently leverage CiviCRM.

With generous support from the community funding our first Form Builder Make-it-happen campaign, Tim Otten & Coleman Watts have begun regular code sprints for phase 1 of the Form Builder project. The extension is evolving rapidly, but I wanted to take a break from development for a few minutes to update you on what we've accomplished so far and where we go from here.

The recent DevCamp in New Jersey presented several sessions on new developments in CiviCRM land as well as showcased several of its inner workings. One session presented by Core Team member Tim Otten stood out for me: Form Builder. If you’re like me, you listen to folks like Tim with a great deal of respect and appreciation for what they say (and do).
