We are starting to run against a few java issues on our FreeBSD platform. Our current hosting provider, Electric Embers, only supports FreeBSD. Hence we need to find a new hosting provider. Here are our requirements:
  • Two dedicated Ubuntu servers which mirror each other for backup purposes
  • LAMP stack + java stack
  • We do need root access and control over the boxes. We are fine doing software upgrades
  • Provider should provide hardware monitoring and offsite backups. Support for software process monitoring would be great
Please let us know if you have recommendations for a reliable, affordable hosting provider that meets the above criteria. If you can help us out in any manner with this, send us an email.

If you're ok with a community-oriented, DIY hosting service as opposed to purely commercial offering, I could recommend Cernio tech cooperative, of which I'm a member. You (or Civicrm as an org) would need to join Cernio (refundable membership fee), then you can get a discounted xen host (with a dedicated cpu and 1 or 2 gigs of ram), or you can colocate your own box(es) at the data center (in San Francisco).

it is a celeron with 1 gig of memory and 3ware raided sata drives.
It will be a few years before it is maxed out with clients.
So I would be more then happy to work you into root access etc.
Maybe if we put another stick of ram in it we could run vmware for your own server?

Fact of life, it's a lot easier to find dedicated hosting with RedHat-derived distributions like RHEL and CentOS. I just went through this process myself, and my reqs were pretty similar. I'm currently hosted on a CentOS 4.5 box, and pretty happy with it.
