In early 2016, the CiviCRM Core Team secured various trademarks and implemented a policy consistent with that of WordPress (at the time, anyway). Over time, discussions around the trademark, most particularly as they related to the use of "civicrm" in domain names, began to surface, resulting in a change to the policy that is in effect as of 18 June 2020.
Disucssion has taken place across various issues and mediums, however this issue is likely the most recent and most resourceful. Here's a summary of changes:
- There is now an automatic licensing procedure whereby the "CiviMarks" are granted without request or consultation needed.
- There is now a more clearly defined grant requirement and procedure for using the "CiviMarks" in cases where automatic licensing does not apply.
- There is more permissive use of of the "CiviMarks" in domain names, titles of websites, products, services, etc.
