Gift aid is tax relief on money donated to UK charities: essentially, the UK government allows non profits to claim pay an extra 28% on each donation made by a UK taxpayer if they are a UK tax payer. Millertech and Third Sector Design are pleased to annouce that we've started work on an CMS independent Gift Aid implementation for CiviCRM that we'll be open sourcing in due course. The major components are some custom data fields for contacts and contributions, a giftaid profile, a couple of gift aid tasks, and a Gift Aid report. We'll package this up in an easy to install module. This implementation has been made possible by contributions from a number of different UK non-profits that have committed money to fund project (including St Ethelburga's, London Cycling Campaign, and Alpha International). If you are a UK non-profit that would benefit from a Gift Aid solution, and you are interested in influencing the feature set and direction of this module (for example if there is some key functionality you need that isn't in the requirements) please consider contributing to this project. Just to emphasise: contributing early is a great and value for money way to get your needs meet - adjusting the module later will probably work out more expensive for you. Have a look over, comment on, and improve the Gift Aid requirements specification. And keep an eye open for the finished module, which will be released in the next few months.

Not all contributions that a taxpayer will qualify (e.g. membership fees don't, I'm told, but event fees can). Will it be possible to specify which payments giftaid can be used on?

You'll be able to choose what specific contribution types to giftaid when creating a batch using the Find Contributions search.

The HMRC website is pretty clear about what is and is not allowed.

Memberships ARE allowed, depending on the terms of the membership. I.e. there is more than one 'membership'.
