We are excited to announce that our 1.9 Alpha release is now available for download here

You can also try it out on our sandbox site here

This release is focused on CiviMail - and unlike previous public demos and sandboxes, you can use the CiviMail menus and features on the public sandbox. However, no actual mail will be sent from the site.

You can view Release Highlights here

The resolved issues list sports the implementation details and lists fixed bugs:

Sandbox

We've setup a public sandbox with CiviMail enabled. The sandbox is a great way to "try out" the new features while helping us test the release. We will update this over time as we fix the remaining open and new issues.

Downloads

You can download the release here. Select from the civicrm-latest section. The filenames include the 1.9 Alpha label: civicrm-1.9.alpha…. Be sure and download the correct version for your CMS (Drupal or Joomla). As announced previously, 1.9 and all subsequent versions of CiviCRM require PHP 5. PHP 4 is no longer supported.

New Installations

If you are installing CiviCRM 1.9 Alpha from scratch, you can use the manual installation instructions linked below (these are for CiviCRM 1.8, but shouldn't change): Drupal and Joomla.

Upgrading from 1.8

If you are upgrading an existing 1.8 site (working with a copy of the site, of course), we have provided a database upgrade script. Instructions for upgrading are here (again, these are for CiviCRM 1.7-to-1.8 upgrade). The 1.8-to-1.9 upgrade script is named civicrm_upgradedb_v1.8_v1.9_41.mysql: Drupal and Joomla

Reporting Issues and Bugs

We look forward to getting your feedback on the release in the coming days. Bugs should be reported via our issue tracking system. Please select 1.9 in the 'Affects Version' dropdown. You will need to register as a user – this ensures that we can follow-up with you on your bug reports if necessary. Please ensure that the bug you've found is not reported already; also, there still are some issues open against CiviCRM 1.9.

Perhaps this idea can be incorporated into 2.0 or a later release. Currently, CiviMail will allow someone to schedule a single mailing. I think this is great. However, what would really be nice is if someone can schedule regular email reminders. For instance, the general meeting of an organization or a committee meeting can have a reminder email set up an scheduled to run every 2nd week of the month, every quarter, once a year, etc... This is similar to what you can do with Yahoo and Google Groups.

Just an idea.
